Plan for a Fully Extinguished Fire
Plan shutdown before you light the fire, so you can stay until it is fully extinguished.
A properly fitted fire pit snuffer lid can be part of the shutdown procedure for a compatible fire pit. It does not instantly cool the bowl, ash or embers, and it is not permission to leave a hot fire unattended.
How a Fire Pit Snuffer Lid Works
A compatible snuffer lid limits the fire’s oxygen supply. Follow the instructions for the exact lid and fire pit, including when and how to position it.
Heat can remain under a lid after visible flames disappear. Keep an adult present, keep children and pets away, and use the specified heat-resistant handling equipment. A covered bowl is not proof that the fire is fully extinguished.
Follow the Shutdown Instructions for Your Model
Use the extinguishing procedure specified for your fire pit and follow local fire restrictions. Water can produce steam when it contacts hot material; a lid can leave hot embers underneath. Neither method should be described as a universal shortcut.
If you are unsure how to shut down your S&S fire pit, ask us for the instructions for your model before use. In an emergency, protect people, move to safety and call 911. Concerns about the finish or metal never take priority over controlling a spreading fire.
A Safer End-of-Night Routine
- Stop adding wood well before you plan to go indoors.
- Keep the fire supervised as it burns down.
- Follow the manufacturer’s procedure, using a compatible snuffer only as directed.
- Do not leave or go to sleep until the fire is fully extinguished and the remaining material is cool.
- Keep the bowl, lid and accessories out of reach until they have cooled completely.
Allow a fire pit cooking grate to cool before cleaning or storage. Never fit a cover over hot accessories unless their instructions expressly allow it.
