Frequently Asked Questions About Heavy Duty Fire Pits

How thick is the steel on an S&S fire pit? Our fire pits are made from high-quality carbon steel approximately ¼ inch thick — significantly heavier gauge than most consumer fire pits on the market. That thickness is what prevents warping, cracking, and burnthrough over time. It’s also what makes ours substantially heavier than most competitors, which is a feature, not a bug.

Will a heavy duty carbon steel fire pit rust? Carbon steel naturally oxidizes when exposed to the elements. Over time, your pit will develop a patina — a darkening, color-shifting layer that forms on the surface of the steel. This is completely normal and actually part of what makes each S&S pit unique. The ½” drain hole at the base of every bowl prevents standing water from collecting inside. We strongly recommend using a snuffer lid between fires to protect the steel from extended moisture exposure and to keep your pit looking great for years.

What size fire pit should I buy? Here’s a simple guide:
